Fitness Over 50: Why It’s So Important
Fitness is important at any age – we all know that. But as we get older, fitness plays a key role in maintaining optimum health, feeling good, and looking great. In our forties and fifties, our bodies begin to change.
Fat deposits show up where there were none before. Things start to sag and lose their shape. Inside our bodies, our cholesterol and blood pressure may be creeping up. This isn’t something we have to just accept!
Engaging in a regular and consistent fitness program will help keep those extra pounds at bay. As we hit middle age, we tend to gain weight. This is caused as much by decreased activity as by hormonal changes.
That’s why as we get older, we need to be more conscious of what we’re doing to get regular cardio and weight training exercise. The cardio is essential for keeping weight down, as well as blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels.
Weight training helps with keeping things toned and in their place, and also helps keep osteoporosis minimized in women. A fitness routine that combines these two elements is a recipe for feeling good, staying healthy and looking great after 50.
Other benefits of fitness over 50 include better mental health. Exercise has been shown to be effective in the battle against depression and stress. And more social opportunities come with working out, whether you exercise at the gym or walk or bike every day with a friend or group of people.
Fitness over 50 is important because we all want to feel and look good, and stay healthy – no matter what our age!
Senior Fitness Plan to Help Maintain Your Health
As you’ve aged, you might have noticed changes in your health and your level of fitness. It can be distressing to see that you’re adding pounds and that your blood pressure or cholesterol levels are creeping higher.
You might worry about some of the age-related diseases that tend to affect people over 50. These worries can serve as a wake up call to you. You don’t have to assume that it’s inevitable that when you get old, things are going to start falling apart. One of the best things you can do to maintain your health as you add years to your life is exercise. A fitness plan is essential at any age, and can improve health significantly. Here are some tips to begin your own “Senior Fitness Plan:”Engage in physical activities that you like. Most people don’t think of gardening or walking the dog as exercise, but it can be. You’re moving muscles, working up a sweat, breathing a bit harder when you are digging in the dirt or taking Fido for a brisk walk. Hire a personal trainer for one or two sessions at your local gym. A trainer will custom design a cardio and weight training program for you. As you gain strength and stamina, you can build on it. Consider dancing classes, or going for a brisk walk at lunch. How about walking the golf course instead of using a cart, or swimming, or mowing the lawn, or going for a bike ride? The key to your fitness plan is to get some real exercise at least five times a week for at least 30 minutes each time. There are so many ways to create a fitness plan. Why not create yours now?
Life After 50 - It's Only Just Beginning!
Life after 50. Some people look at middle age and the golden years with dread. Some realize that it is only just the beginning of a very exciting time in your life. Once you hit “a certain age,” things start to change.
The kids are older and able to care for themselves. They eventually graduate and move out. You may be considering retiring or cutting your work back in order to have more time to spend doing other things, like pursuing hobbies, second careers, or even a return to college. While you’re experiencing growing freedom, you might be experiencing some anxiety about what life will look like as you grow older. One thing you can do for yourself to keep things looking good is to start a regular physical fitness program if you haven’t already.Physical fitness is key to maintaining great health during your entire life, and that applies to life after 50 as well. By staying physically active and fit, you give yourself many advantages as you age. Regular exercise helps keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels stable and healthy, and can help stave off diabetes or keep it from worsening. Exercise also helps keep additional pounds from attaching themselves to your body. Stress and depression can happen at any age, and regular exercise is shown in studies to reduce the effects of both significantly. For both men and women, strength training can help keep bones strong. If you need to kick-start your fitness after 50 plan, go walking or biking. Take a swim or join a water aerobics class. Head for the gym and take a few sessions with a personal trainer, then continue working out on your own. Get started – your life is just beginning!Don't Miss Out on These Wonderful "Over 50" Resources:

I really like the fact that it is geared for the older crowd as compared to the under-30's

This new fitness walking product positions the walker a safe distance to the rear of the bicycle making it easy to walk or jog long distances with the bicycle at his/her side without tripping on the pedal. Its hard for people around the age of 50 to maintain a fit and healthy body but its really more important to be fit and healthy in this age
I agree with you. Just about everyone, especially those of us over 50, can benefit immensely from a strength training program. We can challenge ourselves in the gym. We just have to start a little easier and progress a little more slowly.
Hi,
Please note our new address!
Please make the change to our address.

Thanks for the balanced approach for seniors - too many other resources aimed at a younger audience promote too strenuous fitness regimes and unhealthy diet suggestions...
It's not just a matter of exercising forcefully as pointed out - moderate excercise and eating fat can be fine... particularly certain kinds of fat. In fact olive-oil appears to be anti-inflammatory while of course other kinds of fat (saturated/hydrogenated) appear to be quite unhealthy. I'm thinking of this article www.impowerage.com/category/fitness/ on the Impowerage.com site.
